This book had been on my TBR list for quite a while and I’m not entirely sure why I decided to pick it up now of all times (in the midst of a pandemic), but I’m certainly glad I did. The book revolves around a future where historians at Oxford are allowed to travel back in time to study certain periods / events without being able to influence them in any way. During one such “mission” things don’t go according to plan trapping a historian, not only in the past, but years later than was planned; right in the middle of the onset of the bubonic plague in England. If this wasn’t enough to make me draw references to our current situation, the historians in present day face their own form of epidemic and have to face the now familiar protocols of quarantine, testing, contact tracing, and of course, rationing toilet paper, among others. Even though the story was a bit slow at times, it felt necessary to convey a certain gravity to the situation of the protagonists and help build up to the spectacular feat that is this book. Any more details would spoil the book so will refrain, but I will say that I really enjoyed this book and would whole heartedly recommend this to anyone. The Doomsday book won both the Hugo and Nebula awards in 1993; both are awards for science-fiction / fantasy works. There are two more novels in the series dubbed the Time Travel Series or the Oxford Time Travel Series. I will definitely be adding these to my TBR.
