I went into this book fairly blind. I had heard of the author and that another book of her’s was quite popular in the romantasy genre, and so I wanted to give this book a whirl. I was a bit unsure in the beginning about whether I would have needed to read the previous books in the series in order to best understand this book. To that I will say, yes and no. Some characters from the earlier books do make an appearance here but they don’t take center-stage so this book can stand on its own. That said, I’m sure people may be able to appreciate the story more if they follow the series from the beginning.
The Undercutting of Rosie and Adam is another tale set in the fantastical world of Tanria created by Megan Bannen in her highly popular first book ‘The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy’. This book follows, you guessed it, Rosie and Adam, as we see how their romance blooms over the course of this book as they deal with the mysteries of the world they inhabit. Rosie Fox is an immortal demi-god on the force that patrols the strange and magical wild regions of Tanria. These are mostly accessed through portals which have started to act weird lately, so when the ‘immortal’ Rosie gets electrocuted while meddling with one, the creator of the portals, Dr. Adam Lee is called in to investigate. When things take a turn for the worse, Rosie and Adam find themselves stuck in Tanria with no easy way back home. Luckily they have company in the form of Rosie’s partner, Duckers, and unfortunately for Duckers, his ex Zeddy.
What follows is quite a charming and heartwarming tale of two people opening up and falling in love. The book never strays from that fact and right from the get-go we can see how it will play out but the author does this so well that it’s just nice to follow along for this ride. The characters are quirky and lovable, and the flow of the story is very easy going and relaxed. Definitely recommended for cosy romantasy fans, and I am definitely going back to read the other books in the series.
