The story revolves around the inhabitants of 10 Marchfield Square where a murder has taken place under mysterious circumstances. That the person murdered isn’t really one to cry over isn’t the issue, but the fact that someone has ruined the sanctity of their home has the owner wanting answers. It doesn’t help when things take a turn for the worse and soon one body becomes more. What happens next is the owner, Celeste, banding together a house cleaner and a crime novelist, both residents of the square, in an attempt to find answers.
It’s a fun read with a decent pace. The characters were quirky and interesting, some more than others. The police always tending to be a little slow/terrible at their jobs in these kind of books is a bit expected but not always necessary. The plot twists enough to keep you guessing but also shaking your head at how some glaringly obvious signs are missed. The ending was a little disappointing as it felt a little convoluted for no reason, and to me, solely to provide some characters with relevant roles in the book.
What started out as it looking to be a Miss Marple-esque mystery did indeed turn into something resembling Only Murders in the Building so that was quite pleasant. 10 Marchfield Square was a fun book to read despite some of the above reservations. It helped scratch that locked-room mystery itch I’d been craving for a while, and while not exactly a suspense, it did keep me engaged till the end. Definitely recommended and I look forward to any more books in this series.
