Book Review: Murder Medic 1 – E.C. Krueger

Note: This copy of Murder Medic 1 was provided by NetGalley.

Murder Medic 1 follows Zoe as she wakes up in a new world after dying to find that she’s been given another chance at life. ‘Life’ may be stretching it though, and she may have been counting her blessings too soon, when the whole gamification of this new world forces Zoe down some interesting choices. It’s not her fault she woke up in a ritual site where a cult was in the midst of performing a dark ritual. As expected our protagonist finds herself in the midst of this ritual and in the end, the focal point of it. The result of which is Zoe becomes a demon-vampire-healer of some sort whose mind is also inhabited by the soul called down from the ritual.

What follows is quite a decent story where we find Zoe learning to harness her powers while also coming to term with this new world around here. This involves a lot of killing, blood, and leveling up. All this while trying to keep her demonic side a secret from everyone, hiding from the very good looking cultist who performed the initial ritual, while also trying to understand this demonic entity that seems to be hanging around in her head.

Decent pace, very interesting world setting, nice characters, and a fairly interesting plot that found me frustrated that the book got over. While several litrpg tropes are very present, the protagonist still managed to feel like a breath of fresh air so that was a pleasant surprise. I look forward to reading the following books in the series, and for those who can’t wait, there is a link to Royal Road where some of the chapters from book 2 have already been published.
