Book Review: You’d Look Better as a Ghost – Joanna Wallace

I’m still a little confused which genre bin to add this book to. Is it a thriller? Is it humour? Is it a mystery? It’s safe to say this book had me hooked.

Joanna Wallace gives us a very unique character who is very reminiscent of Villanelle from Killing Eve but without any of the temerity. Instead, we have our protagonist, Clair, who for all intents and purposes seems like a very ordinary, albeit socially awkward individual; but one who enjoys the thrill of killing people who’ve wronged her. Yeah…

The book delves into Clair’s life as she navigates life post her father’s demise, while also giving us glimpses into her past to better understand how and why Clair is the way she is.

Clair’s utter nonchalance in certain situations had me chuckling while her annoyance at most of the people around her spoke to that inner demon we seemed to hide away but who also has similar thoughts. Only here, Clair would prefer to act on those suggestions.

This was a fairly entertaining book. Nothing over the top, but gripping enough to keep me invested till the end. The writing is simple and makes the experience a very relaxing one. Definitely a book to cosy up with on a lazy day.

It should be noted there are themes related to suicide, abuse, and dementia, which the author has tackled fairly well.
