Game Review: Midnight Fight Express

Midnight Fight Express is one of those games that you will find yourself going back to constantly. Released in August of last year, it’s a button-mashing beat-em up but with a lot more finesse to it. The story follows a former member of the criminal underworld who is lured back into the mix by a talking A.I drone. As the name suggests, the events of the game take place over the course of a night, with the ‘final battle’ set to happen just before dawn breaks. The protagonist of our story goes about trying to remember his former life by essentially beating the information out of everyone he comes across.

While there is a lot of button-mashing, the game does make the fight sequences, and character/NPC movements, very satisfying to execute and watch. You have the ability to counter incoming attacks, use objects from around the environment as weapons (ever wanted to use a toilet brush a weapon? You can now!), and a myriad of ways in which you can kill someone (and be rewarded the more bizarre it gets). As gruesome as that sounds, it is exactly that. The game doesn’t shy away from showing someone’s head being split apart, run over by vehicles, getting a knife stuck in the eye, etc. Do keep that in mind before getting into this game. The graphics are a bit old-school and the characters have no faces, so you won’t have to worry about any really gruesome details as such. You can see from the images below what I mean.

The best way to describe the action of this game would be to say its a lot like if John Wick decided to go crazy on all the criminal elements in a city. Yeah, I think that best describes it. The game surprised me in how much fun, and forgiving, it was for someone to play the game. There are several difficulty options, as well as objectives to be completed for the more hardcore enthusiasts. Your character can also be customised with a range of outfits and gear that you unlock as you play through the game. There is also a skill tree through which you can learn new moves as you progress. There are 40 odd levels in the game which, alone with the objectives and so on, will keep one entertained for a decent while. It took around 8 hours to finish the main levels, and I was quite happy with the game. Will I play it again in the future? Very likely. Definitely Recommended.
