Series Review: Fred, the Vampire Accountant – Drew Hayes

I stumbled upon Drew Hayes when I was looking for a superhero fix and had heard about his series superpowereds. While checking on goodreads I stumbled upon this other series called ‘Fred the vampire accountant’ series. I have to say that did make me chuckle a bit and the first book’s title, ‘The Utterly Uninteresting and Unadventurous Tales of Fred, the Vampire Accountant’ had me all the more curious. While I was about to move on and look for something else I realised that the Vampire Accoutant series is ongoing with 7 books out at the moment. Whatever they were doing clearly seemed to be working. I decided to bite the bullet and picked up the first book, then the second, the third, now here I sit having finished all 7 books out so far.

Now, these aren’t amazing reads but they’re quite good. The story is centered around, you guessed it, an accountant named Fred who happens to be a vampire. The books are written in the form of Fred’s memoirs with each book starting with usually the same little letter to the reader. Each book while encompassing a large ‘plot’ consists of several smaller stories that together paint a picture of a certain time in Fred’s life.

Fred is an introverted accountant that loves his job but fate had other plans when he finds himself turned into a vampire one night. Fred was a boring guy by most standards before becoming a vampire and he saw no need for that to change after the transformation either. He shifted to working at night because of the sunlight, and worked out an arrangement to get his blood from a local hospital as opposed to the usual vampiric means. Things were going alright for Fred till shit hits the fan at his high school reunion which is attacked by supernatural beings. Through Fred we’ll encounter other supernatural beings and learn that not every myth and rumour we hear is true. Fred soon finds himself in the company of a very eclectic group of individuals and together we get to experience his adventures as he traverses through his not-so-mundane life anymore.

The stories are very easy to follow and interesting to boot. The series makes for a cosy read and one that is recommended to anyone trying to get out of a reading slump or just in need of some light fantasy. While there no in your face humour, there are several instances which made me chuckle and smile. Definitely recommended. Until next time!
