Series Review: Spy x Family Vol. 1-8

Spy x Family is a manga that I didn’t know I needed. Set in a fictional world where a tumultuous peace exists between the rival nations of Westalis and Ostania, a Westalis spy is tasked with infiltrating and spying on an Ostanian leader. Unfortunately, the target is sort of a recluse who only ever makes an appaerance at gatherings at his son’s private school.

The spy, Loid Forger, is thus tasked with forming a family, and enrolling his child in the same private school in the hopes of getting close to his target and competing the mission. In the hunt/search for the right members of his pseudo family is when things get interesting. He eventually adopts a young orphan girl, Anya, to be his daughter and makes a deal with a woman named Yor to play the part of his wife. Little did he realise that his adopted daughter is a telepath and his ‘wife’ is an assassin. While the ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ have no idea about the other’s jobs the telepathic daughter knows everything from reading their minds, and seems to revel in this exciting new life she finds herself in. She is also terrified of all the danger they seem to deal with behind their smiles, and tries her best to help her dad achieve his mission (unbeknownst to him at times).

The stories are in the form of missions and follows the day to day of this family as they go about their individual tasks. This makes for some hilarious interactions when their real jobs interfere in each other’s lives making for some laugh out loud moments. The stories are very easy to follow, the artwork is charming, and the characters absolutely loveable. These are the kind of feel good stories that everyone needs.

As of writing this there are around 9 volumes published. Not realy sure as to how many more are to come but I hope this series continues for a while. Definitely recommend this to anyone who’s a fan of manga or would like to get into it. There is also an anime adaptation that’s been released and from the trailer it’s going to be just as good as the manga. Until next time!

Rating: 4/5
